Test cricket.
Worth the wait.

A monthly cricket journal

By Arvind

About the column

There is a lot of cricket between the highlights.

I think Test cricket is the best form of the game.

LongGame is my monthly excuse to spend more time with it.

Some months, that means stepping inside a great match. Other months, it means staying with a spell, a partnership or a decision long enough to understand what it changes.

A scorecard tells us what happens. The pleasure is in working out how, and why it matters.

A leave can bring a crowd to its feet.
We should probably talk about that.

The game gets its context.

Expect the background that makes a contest matter: the series, the people, the conditions, the pressure carried into the ground. The story moves between the cricket and the world around it.

There is room for history, tactical detail and the occasional dressing-room absurdity. Old Tests and current cricket both belong here.

One story. Every month.

LongGame is written by Arvind. It is a column for readers who enjoy the long form of the game, and for anyone curious about what keeps the rest of us watching.

The illustrations are pencil sketches, created with AI and labelled as illustrations. Historical scenes are interpretations of the match.

Settle in. There is time.
